On December 1-2, 2023, the Ho Chi Minh City Dialysis Society Therapy (HDST) organized The 7th annual scientific conference and received the attention of many medical staff nationwide. Not only on a domestic scale, the conference had the participation of speakers from countries with modern dialysis techniques such as the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, etc.
HSDT is a professional organization in the medical field, under the Ho Chi Minh City Medical Association, gathering medical staff working in the field of dialysis with the purpose of sharing treatment experiences and continuous medical education. HSDT operates under the coordination of Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Bui, a physician with more than 40 years of experience in the field of dialysis. After a long time of working with kidney disease at major hospitals such as Binh Dan Hospital, Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, FV Hospital, … he always wanted to build an organization to support colleagues in the field of kidney dialysis. Since its establishment, HSDT has made many positive contributions to the medical community not only in Ho Chi Minh City but also nationwide.
A/Prof. Pham Van Bui presented at conference
Chronic kidney disease is a condition that progresses slowly and gradually causes kidney dysfunction. Common causes of chronic kidney failure include diabetes, high blood pressure or some kidney diseases such as glomerulonephritis, interstitial nephritis or tubular nephritis, pyelonephritis and surrounding structures, polycystic kidney disease… Most patients with chronic kidney failure entering the final stage needing dialysis are accompanied by other chronic diseases that need treatment. Because kidney function is now weakened, the body’s excretion ability is significantly reduced, the use of drugs on patients with chronic kidney disease also needs to be very careful. This requires medical staffs to have a good grasp not only of dialysis techniques but also of drugs to treat associated diseases such as anemia, heart failure, diabetes, malnutrition. The above contents were presented and discussed enthusiastically, some of the most interested reports at the conference: “Artificial kidney dialysis for patients with heart failure” by Prof. A Davenport, UK; “Adsorption therapy compared to HDF in MHD” by Dr. Nguyen Duc Loc MD, An Sinh Hospital; “Renal-specific oral nutrition in chronic kidney disease/dialysis” by Associate Professor Pham Van Bui – President of HSDT.
According to the World Health Organization, chronic kidney disease is a major public health problem. Chronic kidney disease caused 4.6% of deaths globally and was the 12th leading cause of death in 2017. Among non-communicable diseases, chronic kidney disease is a progressive disease with a high prevalence, which is not promptly diagnosed and given due attention. To improve the quality of care for patients on dialysis, resource support for medical staffs is essential.
