On October 14th, 2023, with the permission of Lam Dong SOH, Otsuka Pharmaceutical Vietnam organized a scientific seminar on “Nutrition in access to treatment surgical patients”. This program is part of a series of annual scientific activities, with the aim of providing updated medical information related to the field of clinical nutrition. The conference was attended by more than 50 medical staff at hospitals in nationwide.
Currently, the issue of nutrition for surgical patients is of concern due to factors: the rate of malnutrition in surgical patients is over 50% and up to 77% in major surgery, the old opinion that surgical patients need to fast before and after is still maintained in some units. Research shows that poor nutrition slows wound healing, increases the risk of anastomotic leakage, increases infection and length of hospital stay. According to new treatment guidelines, feeding patients early after surgery has many positive effects, promoting intestinal and immune system activity, thereby reducing complications of anastomotic leakage and helping patients recover quickly. Choosing the right nutritional products, combining parenteral and enteral nutrition appropriately is an important factor in ERAS (Early recovery after surgery) – a model process that helps patients recover quickly after surgery. These issues have been discussed through the topics: Overview of the role of perioperative nutrition in gastrointestinal surgery, ERAS for patients with hepatobiliary tract surgery, ERAS for patients with hepatobiliary tract surgery, Using Albumin in surgery & combining EN + PN in enhancing protein synthesis & regulating metabolism

After the presentations, the chairman and speakers had a lively discussion with the guests, the importance of changing the way of caring for patients before and after surgery based on previous experience to procedures with medical evidence was discussed at the conference.
