On October 20-21, 2023, the Vietnam Dialysis Association (VDA) organized the 3rd scientific congress in Quy Nhon city. The topic – “Metabolic disorders in artificial kidney” gathered the participation of more than 1,200 medical staffs and engineers in the field of dialysis.
Chronic kidney failure is a common disease in many countries, including Vietnam. The disease causes the physiological function of the kidney to decline and cannot be reversed. Patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure need kidney replacement treatment by peritoneal dialysis, artificial kidney or kidney transplantation to maintain life. Of which, artificial kidney is the most popular method in our country today. According to statistics, there are more than 50,000 patients nationwide receiving kidney replacement treatment, including nearly 35,000 patients with artificial kidney. There are more than 350 artificial kidney units nationwide, from district to central levels. Patients need dialysis 3-4 times/week and maintain throughout their lives, so improving the quality of treatment at district is very necessary to facilitate patients and avoid overloading at central units.
Conference delegates
According to Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung MD, President of VDA, chronic kidney disease is often accompanied by many specific disorders in dialysis: mineral and bone metabolism disorders; blood lipid disorders, hormone disorders… These disorders have pathogenesis, manifestations and treatment methods that are completely different from diseases in other specialties.

This scientific conference has 83 reports, which are elaborate studies with great practical value such as “Clinical practice of diabetic dialysis patients” by Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Quoc Toan, Military Hospital 103, “Nutritional intervention for diabetic dialysis patients” by Dr. Chu Thi Tuyet MD, Huu Nghi Viet Xo Hospital, “The role of antiplatelet aggregation and anticoagulation in patients with renal failure on dialysis” by Professor Muh Wong, Training President, Asia Pacific Nephrology Association…
Protein-energy wasting (PEW) is a nutritional disorder that occurs in 54% of patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis. Each dialysis cycle, patients lose about 6-12 g of amino acids through the membrane. Combined with a poor diet and strict abstinence, patients with artificial kidney are very susceptible to the risk of nutritional deficiencies. Nutritional provision for artificial kidney patients can be through the mouth or the vein (infusion during dialysis).
VDA members with Otsuka staffs were at the congress
Recognizing the importance and significance that the activities of the Vietnam Dialysis Association brings to the medical community, Otsuka Pharmaceutical Vietnam has accompanied the Vietnam Dialysis Association since 2020 when the association was first established. Otsuka is honored to sponsor this conference and contribute to bringing more opportunities to update knowledge for medical staff across the country.
