Today, there are approximately 15,000 patients with end – stage kidney disease who are undergoing hemodialysis and a large proportion of patients with acute kidney failure need hemodialysis treatment at the hospitals in Vietnam. A/Prof. Viet Thang Le (MD. PhD.) – Head of Nephrology & Dialysis department, No.103 hospital – presented on the topic “Nutrition for patients with acute kidney failure: from guidelines to clinical practices”. He emphasized the protein energy wasting (PEW) status in patients with acute kidney failure and the importance role of nutrition (oral & IV) in these patients. Dr. Duc Loc Nguyen MD. PhD. – Head of Dialysis, An Sinh hospital – discussed with experts on the topic “Optimal protein control in patients with chronic kidney failure”.

Nowadays, there is a high rate of malnutrition among patients with chronic kidney failure, especially dialysis patients. Branched – chain amino acids (BCAA) will improve nutrition status in these patients. In final section of symposium, A/Prof. Van Bui Pham (MD. PhD.)– President of the Ho Chi Minh City Society of Dialysis Therapies – updated some new approaches of nutrition treatment for patients with kidney failure. He emphasized that plasma albumin concentrations was the strongest indicator of survival rate and intradialytic parenteral nutrition will improve clinical outcomes and survival rate in patients with chronic kidney failure.
