Otsuka Vietnam is proud to be a Silver Sponsor of the 5th Annual Scientific Conference, organized by the Vietnam Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (VietSPEN), on December 6, 2025, in Da Nang.
Sharing her thoughts on the theme selection for the 5th Conference, Luu Ngan Tam, MD. PhD. – President of the Vietnam Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (VietSPEN), Head of the Nutrition Department, Cho Ray Hospital – stated that, along with socio-economic development, obesity is becoming a new burden. Currently, obesity has been identified in the International Classification of Diseases (issued by the World Health Organization – WHO) as a disease, as it is accompanied by many metabolic disorders and is the cause of many other chronic diseases. Controlling obesity is becoming increasingly difficult, and the effectiveness of treatment is not truly effective, leading to complications and hospitalization for patients. This raises the question of whether obese people are truly getting enough nutrition – and the answer is probably no. In particular, the loss of muscle mass in this group of patients is often “masked,” while this is a factor that negatively affects treatment outcomes. Therefore, the Executive Committee and Organizing Committee decided to choose this year’s theme as nutritional treatment for obese patients with muscle wasting. The conference will focus on general topics related to the epidemiology of obesity, nutrition in intensive care, surgery, pediatrics, and many other key areas, promising to provide in-depth and practical scientific exchanges.

The conference consisted of one plenary session, two thematic sessions, and two satellite sessions, revolving around topics including: Overview of obesity and treatment; Selection of specific nutritional substrates in clinical practice; Clinical nutrition for hospitalized obese patients; Pediatrics; Nutrition in critically ill patients. These topics resulted in 15 diverse and in-depth presentations by leading national experts, such as: Obesity management in Vietnam; Optimal protein selection in the treatment of obese patients – From hospital to community; Optimal perioperative nutrition for obese patients after gastric surgery – Case studies; Approaches and management of childhood obesity; Optimizing the effectiveness of enteral nutrition interventions in critically ill patients… Notably, the program also featured the participation of two international experts: Prof. Dr. Paula Cristina Ravasco – Director of the International Postgraduate Program “Nutrition and Metabolism in Cancer”, Faculty of Medicine, Catholic University of Portugal, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pavel Kohout – Head of Internal Medicine, Head of Nutrition Department, Charles University Hospital, Czech Republic. The two presenters delivered three highly practical reports.
The 5th National Scientific Conference “Nutrition Updates for Obese/Muscle Loss Individuals – Clinical Applications to Improve Treatment Effectiveness” concluded successfully, attracting approximately 700 delegates from across the country.
