On April 5th, 2025, Bach Mai Hospital organized a scientific congress with the topic “Nutrition in cancer patients”. The congress had the participation of medical experts from the fields of nutrition and oncology, with the goal of providing participants with updated knowledge in caring for cancer patients. The program was held live at Bach Mai hospital hall and streamed online on the Zoom platform, attracting the attention of many medical staff and medical students nationwide.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death after cardiovascular disease. According to Globocan 2020 data, there were 18 million new cases and 43.8 million current cases of cancer worldwide; 9.6 million people died of cancer in 2018. In Vietnam, there were 183,000 new cases and 123,000 deaths in 2020 [1] .
Cancer affects nutritional status and vice versa, poor nutritional status also affects the response to treatment, treatment methods and quality of life of cancer patients. In fact, up to 20% of cancer patients die from malnutrition, not just from cancer. Nutritional intervention plays an important role in improving physical condition, helping patients respond better to treatments such as drugs or chemotherapy, radiotherapy or before and after surgery. These are issues mentioned in reports and discussions at the conference.
